The University of Michigan, also known as UMichigan, UMich, U of M, UM or simply Michigan, is a public research university located in Ann Arbor, which is the county seat of Washtenaw County, situated in the US state of Michigan, with a population estimated at a number of more than 114 000 inhabitants, during the 2008 census, fact which makes it the 5th largest city in the state.
The University of Michigan was founded in 1817, as the Catholepistemiad, or University of Michigania, in Detroit, being moved to its present location in 1837. Today UM is considered to be one of the original eight Public Ivies, being ranked 19th among universities worldwide, in the most recent World University Rankings.
UM has an enrollment of more than 26 000 undergraduate and over 15 000 graduate students, in 600 academic programs, from all 50 US states and over 100 foreign countries. Each year, only 5400 out of 30 000 applicants are accepted, making the University of Michigan one of the most selective educational institutions in the country.
The athletic teams from U of M are known as the Michigan Wolverines, who compete in the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision (formally Division I-A) and in the Big Ten Conference in all sports except men's ice hockey, in which they participate in Central Collegiate Hockey Association, including in the Collegiate Water Polo Association, in women's water polo. The Wolverine have experienced victory in many of their sports, in 10 of the past 14 years, having finished in the top 5 in NACDA Director's Cup.
The list of notable U of M alumni contains resonant names such as: Thomas H. Weller - Nobel Prize winner in Physiology or Medicine in 1954, Jerry White - cofounder and executive director of the Landmine Survivors Network (LSN), John Cashman - Boeing test pilot who piloted the first flight of the 777, Theodore Freeman - one of the third group of astronauts selected by NASA, Tom S. Monaghan - founder and former owner of Domino's Pizza, Larry Page - Co-founder of Google, as well as many other people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
